Here are seven key things to know about this new policy.
1. Goal
Policy 130 protects student rights and defines student responsibilities. It serves to promote and apply the rights of University community members.
2. People affected
Policy 130 applies to all uOttawa students, at University facilities as well as anywhere else they’re involved in University activities, including online.
3. Responsible conduct
We act responsibly when we foster an environment where respect, civility, diversity, opportunity and inclusiveness are valued. Conducting oneself responsibly means committing to:
- Respecting people, along with the facilities and belongings of the University and others.
- Employing information technologies and acting online with good judgment.
- Staying away from dangerous objects and not putting others at risk.
- Pursuing your student life without being a nuisance or a bother.
- Extending respect to the law and to University policies.
- Communicating truthful information.
- Treating others honestly and maintaining confidentiality.
4. Rights protected under Policy 130
Policy 130 is meant to protect the right to:
- Be treated with respect and dignity, without harassment or discrimination.
- Express one’s opinions freely and publicly.
- Report a concern or disrespect of one’s rights without fear of reprisals.
- Be treated according to the principles of natural justice and procedural fairness.
- Have the rights set forth in University policies be respected.
- Maintain ownership of original material one creates and receive proper recognition for one’s ideas, work and collaboration within the University community.
5. Breach of responsible conduct
A breach occurs when someone acts in a manner contrary to responsible conduct or encourages or assists others, by words or action, to do so.
6. Penalties
Policy 130 calls for various measures in response to breaches of responsible conduct, from educational measures to suspension or expulsion from the University (with possible conditions).
