Drowning claims over 400 lives every year: it remains a serious, yet preventable. public health issue in Canada. During NDPW, we encourage individuals, families and communities to take simple, proactive steps that can significantly reduce the number of these tragedies.
This year’s theme highlights the importance of preparing, planning ahead, building skills, and making informed decisions in, on and around the water. With summer being the busiest season for water activities, it’s a critical reminder that drowning can happen quickly, often silently, but is frequently preventable.
Key water safety messages
Everyone has a role to play in preventing drowning. Keep these core reminders top of mind:
- Supervise children closely: Stay within arm’s reach at all times; if you’re not that close, you’re too far away.
- Never swim alone: Many incidents occur when individuals are by themselves; always swim with a buddy.
- Wear a lifejacket: Especially when boating or participating in open‑water activities.
- Choose lifeguarded settings: Supervised environments significantly reduce risk.
- Learn to swim: Swimming is a fundamental, lifesaving skill for all ages.
- Make smart choices: Avoid alcohol or drugs around water, and plan ahead for weather and water conditions.
National Drowning Prevention Week is an opportunity for all of us to recommit to safer habits around water. By staying alert, building skills and making thoughtful choices, we can reduce preventable tragedies and help ensure that every Canadian enjoys the water safely. Whether at the pool, the beach or on a boat, every action you take contributes to a safer community. Together, we can make a meaningful difference.
