In honour of her retirement, Professor Martha Jackman will be celebrated on May 23, 2024 at a symposium exploring the major social justice issues that have marked her exceptional career.

Long recognized as one of Canada’s leading scholars on socio-economic and equality rights, Professor Jackman has been an extraordinary champion for inclusiveness and a powerful example to the academy, the legal profession and the broader public of the unique and valuable role of the activist-scholar in advancing equality in Canada.

Her internationally-recognized record of research articulates rigorous interpretations of constitutional rights to equality, life, liberty and security of the person, and has been the central authoritative source for poverty related Charter litigation in Canada for over 35 years. She has also played a pivotal role in shaping future generations of feminist advocates. Through her teaching and advocacy efforts, she has equipped aspiring legal minds with the tools they need to navigate the complexities of substantive rights advocacy.

This symposium – “Law as a Terrain for Advancing Social Justice” – will bring together scholars, lawyers and equality activists to recognize Professor Jackman's remarkable contributions and reaffirm a collective commitment to advancing social justice through legal channels. This event will serve as a testament to Martha Jackman’s enduring impact and the ongoing relevance of her tireless pursuit of equality.
