Chantal Bernier is a Distinguished Privacy Practitioner in Residence at the Centre for Law, Technology and Society at the University of Ottawa.
Chantal Bernier is the Co-Chair of the Global Privacy and Cybersecurity Group, and a member of Dentons’ Canadian Cybersecurity and Privacy practice group. She advises leading national and international companies on expanding their activities in Canada and Europe, entering the e-commerce market, implementing data analytics tools, and deploying artificial intelligence systems. Her clients include, among others, adtech companies, financial institutions, biotechnology companies, data analytics firms, and government institutions.
Chantal Bernier served for six years as head of the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada (OPC) and, in that role, led numerous national and international privacy investigations in both the public and private sectors. Her extensive senior-level experience within the Government of Canada over many years gives her a distinct advantage and enables her to fully understand the governance challenges business leaders face when adopting new data-processing and artificial intelligence technologies.
Chantal Bernier maintains her commitment to public policy as Chair of Statistics Canada’s Advisory Committee on Ethics and the Modernization of Microdata Access, as a member of Public Safety Canada’s National Security Transparency Advisory Group, and as a member of the Steering Committee of the Canadian Data Governance and AI Standards Collaborative of the Standards Council of Canada.
Chantal Bernier works in French, English, Italian, and Spanish, and is highly active internationally.
