Congratulations to Alexandre Faubert Charlebois, who gave an inspiring speech at the Faculty of Law’s Convocation ceremony on June 6.

Every year, a Class Speaker is selected by his or her peers to represent the graduating class at the Spring Convocation. Being chosen for this honour is a testament to Charlebois’ academic rigor and leadership qualities.

A graduate of the Civil Law Section, Charlebois will begin his studies in Common Law in the fall of 2024.

He graduated on the Dean’s List, but he has stood out as a leader from the beginning of his studies in law. In first year, he was elected the 1L student representative on the AED (l’Association des étudiantes et étudiants en droit civil – civil law student society) and was also awarded a prize for leadership amongst first-year students. His involvement doesn't stop there: he has taken part in several public speaking competitions, notably winning second prize for litigation, in the 2023 Pierre-Basile Mignault Civil Law Competition.

In addition to his academic achievements, Charlebois has maintained an active role in student life, serving as Vice-President of External Affairs for the AED, representing first-year students on the Faculty Council, and acting as a mentor for the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program.

At Convocation, Charlebois' speech was celebratory, while still acknowledging the difficult journey he and his fellow graduates endured to earn their degrees. Most of them began their law studies during the pandemic, and for the first two years attended classes only online.

"I'd like to take a moment to focus on our triumphs. We have come out of this adventure as different versions of ourselves... armed with new acquaintances, new friends and colleagues, and new titles.”

“Jurist for life’, a title no one can take away from us, no matter what journeys lie ahead.”

"Life is short, life is hard, and life is beautiful. We all need each other. We owe it to ourselves to share these beautiful and important occasions with those we love, and to nourish our hearts with these memories in times of need."

Charlebois’ impressive professional experience includes a clerkship in the Citizen Assistance Program at the Small Claims Division of the Court of Québec. He is currently completing a Judicial Internship in the Civil Branch of the Supreme Court of the State of New York, in the office of Civil Law alum, Judge Gerald Lebovits, LL.L. 1979. Next year he will  begin a clerkship at the Superior Court of Justice of Ontario.

In addition to his legal studies, Charlebois is also a talented chef, having graduated from the Institut de tourisme et d'hôtellerie du Québec and Collège La Cité in culinary arts. His experience as a chef has led him to organize large-scale private events in Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, New York, Paris and Lyon.

We are proud to welcome Alexandre Faubert-Charlebois to our alumni community and wish him every success in his future endeavors. His dedication, leadership and academic excellence are an example to us all.
