golden award
The Faculty of Social Sciences is proud to announce that Sophie Lachapelle, PhD candidate in Criminology, has been awarded the 2025 Jean-Paul Brodeur Award.

Named in honour of the late Jean-Paul Brodeur, former director of the International Centre for Comparative Criminology (C.I.C.C.) and long-time contributor to Criminology magazine, this award is presented every two years to recognize the best student contribution published in the past two years. First awarded in 2011, it highlights excellence in emerging criminological research.

Sophie received this recognition for her article, “‘You were relieved, but at the same time terrified’: Exploring the emotional geographies of admissions and discharge in Canadian federal prisons.” The jury praised her work for its originality, depth of analysis, and significant contribution to the field.

The award also comes with a $1,000 scholarship and will be formally presented at the Congress of the Quebec Criminology Society in October.

Congratulations to Sophie on this outstanding achievement!
