Civilités is a new podcast series that explores these questions and more, offering an intimate look at the realities of research and higher education in civil law. Through in-depth conversations with scholars and professors from Quebec and around the world, the series sheds light on the human, institutional, and intellectual forces shaping contemporary civil law scholarship.
Hosted by the Civil Law Section’s Professor Julie Paquin and Professor Marc-Antoine Picotte of the Université du Québec en Outaouais, Civilités brings together voices from diverse legal systems and academic cultures, creating a space for candid reflection on academic trajectories, structural constraints, and the evolving nature of legal research.
The series is comprised of three episodes. Episode 1 explores the many paths that lead to becoming a civil law researcher, highlighting chance encounters, motivations, and early-career challenges. Episode 2 turns to the role of funding in shaping research agendas, examining how access to resources and institutional expectations influence scholarly work. Episode 3 focuses on the everyday realities of academic life, from balancing teaching and research to managing administrative demands and social pressures.
Thoughtful, accessible, and deeply grounded in lived experience, Civilités will resonate with established scholars, early-career researchers, graduate students, and anyone curious about the inner workings of academic life in civil law.
