A new global policy brief co-led by Professor Florian Martin-Bariteau is offering timely guidance to governments navigating the growing use of artificial intelligence in public administration.

Developed through a collaboration between the University of Ottawa’s AI + Society Initiative and IVADO, the brief, entitled Governing with AI: Four Actions to Build a Transformative and Resilient Public Administration in the Age of AI, provides actionable recommendations to support responsible, effective AI integration in government. Drawing on international expertise, including co-lead Professor Catherine Régis (Université de Montréal), this brief highlights the importance of institutional capacity, accountability, and public trust in ensuring that AI strengthens, rather than undermines, public systems.

Professor Martin-Bariteau, who directs the AI + Society Initiative, emphasizes that successful implementation depends not only on technological innovation, but on thoughtful governance: “Without planning, transparency, accountability and oversight, AI in the public sector will only amplify current dysfunctions and feed distrust.”

The brief is part of a broader global policy initiative aimed at equipping decision-makers with practical tools to address the complex legal, ethical, and societal challenges posed by AI.
