Dr. Tara Elton-Marshall (English and French)
Associate Professor, School of Epidemiology and Public Health, Faculty of Medicine
Professor Elton-Marshall’s research has investigated the expansion of online gambling and health disparities in mental health and addiction, and psychosocial mediators of addiction. She can speak to how people form gambling habits and how addiction fuels it.
“Gambling has become so normalized, and the result is a surge in gambling marketing, particularly using sports betting to attract new gamblers across the socioeconomic spectrum. Men are being targeted with themes linking gambling to sports and peer acceptance. We are hearing reports of athletes in post-secondary schools for example being targeted to engage in sports betting and that can carry into later years.”
