"Ecuador's presidential elections were held in a climate of great violence, following the assassination of an anti-corruption candidate plus two national consultations on oil and mining development.

"The left-wing "correist" candidate Luisa González - seen as a protégé of  former president Rafael Correa - who leads 35-year-old entrepreneur Daniel Noboa after the 1st round yesterday. Ecuadorians seem intent on pursuing oil exploitation in the Yasuni reserve, unique in the world for its biodiversity."
