Professor André Laliberté, School of Political Studies, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Ottawa has authored a chapter titled “Welfare in China after World War Two” in the Japanese edited volume World History of Well-being (福祉の世界史), published by Yuhikaku.

This chapter is the Japanese translation of a concise, chronological overview of Chinese social policies since 1945. It traces the evolution of welfare from the post–World War Two period through the establishment of the People’s Republic of China, and focuses in particular on the economic reform era that began in 1978.

Professor Laliberté highlights the advances and setbacks in social coverage under successive Chinese leaders, from Deng Xiaoping to Xi Jinping, showing how welfare policies have both shaped and responded to China’s political and economic transformations. The chapter contributes a China-focused perspective to a global history of well-being, offering valuable insights for scholars and students of social policy and comparative politics.
