Textbooks and course materials can represent a significant cost for students. You can help reduce that burden through the use of open educational resources (OER) : a learning object available freely (at no cost to users) and openly (without the usual copyright restrictions) that can be reproduced, adapted and distributed, often under the terms of a Creative Commons licence.

Since 2017-2018, eCampusOntario has been reporting on savings achieved by students with OER in the postsecondary sector at the provincial level and by institution. While reaching a total of $38,778,436 in Ontario, total savings at the University of Ottawa are estimated at under $750,000, a proportionally modest amount. Are we underusing open educational resources? It is more likely that local OER adoptions are underreported, limiting the ability to measure and demonstrate their full impact.

If you are teaching at the University of Ottawa and assigned an OER to your students this term, let us know! Share your OER adoption until March 31 using this form. You are also encouraged to share multiple reports of OER adoptions for this term or from passed years if you have not done so already directly with eCampusOntario.

The information that you submit will be compiled by the Library and provided to eCampusOntario to be included in its impact tracking efforts for the province and at uOttawa. Note that your name and email address are not collected.

If you have any questions, concerns or are interested in using OER but are not sure where to start, contact the Copyright and Affordable Learning Librarian.
