Professor Alschner has taken on the role of McMillan LLP’s first Academic in Residence, International Trade. In this role, he will work alongside McMillan’s international trade team, offering strategic guidance to clients on a broad range of issues, including global trade rules, sanctions, export controls and cross-border policy shifts.
Professor Alschner is a Full Professor in the Common Law Section, where he holds the Hyman Soloway Chair in Business and Trade Law, which was renewed in 2025. Professor Alschner’s ambitious research program combines legal analysis with data-driven and empirical methods. Most recently, he earned a SSHRC Partnership Development Grant to study how Canada can strengthen its critical minerals supply chains to remain both competitive and secure amid shifting global dynamics. For this project, Professor Alschner leads a collaborative team that brings together scholars, policy experts, industry partners, and government stakeholders, including colleagues from across the University of Ottawa.
