This year’s QS World University Rankings by Subject provides the latest international recognition for uOttawa and the Faculty of Medicine.

The University of Ottawa’s thriving medical education and research ecosystem continues to reach new heights. In the latest QS World University Rankings by Subject, uOttawa placed 93rd globally in the Medicine category, and placed within the 51–100 global grouping for Anatomy and Physiology, reinforcing its reputation as a leading institution for world-class medical innovation.

The Top 100 rankings reflect a clear upward trajectory on the international academic stage. In the medicine category, uOttawa ranked 124th in 2025 and 123rd in 2024. The rise to 93rd in 2026 puts a spotlight on the university’s growing influence and visibility in the global medical academic community. It also puts uOttawa in the fifth position in the medicine category when comparing Canadian universities.

The rankings are from the British firm Quacquarelli Symonds, considered among the most influential providers of international university rankings.

Interdisciplinary collaboration drives results

This significant progress is bolstered by the performance of the Faculty of Medicine, a major engine of world-class basic science and clinical research and a globally recognized innovator in medical education.

Over many years, there has been sustained focus at the Faculty of Medicine on supporting interdisciplinary research output, faculty expertise, and international collaboration—key metrics used to tally the QS subject rankings.

Dr. Melissa Forgie, Interim Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, says the presence of uOttawa in top subject rankings for medicine reflects its broader commitment to excellence across health-related fields.

“Our placement in the 2026 QS subject rankings reflects years of dedication to advancing medical knowledge and training the next generation of leaders in medicine. This achievement belongs to our entire community—learners, scientists, teachers and clinicians, whose work continues to elevate our global standing,” Dr. Forgie says.

Supported by affiliated research institutes and teaching hospitals within the Ottawa Academic Health Network, our broad Ottawa community is pushing the boundaries of what is  possible in biotechnology and health sciences while collaboratively tackling urgent challenges — from neuroscience and molecular medicine to pandemic preparedness and care provider access in our communities.

We continuously strive to improve community health through medical research, education, interdisciplinary collaboration, and responsive patient care,” Dr. Forgie says.
