Viviana Fernandez
We are pleased to share that Associate Director Viviana Fernandez has been appointed to the SAR Canada (SARCAN) National Steering Committee for a two-year mandate starting in November 2025.

Viviana has led the Scholars at Risk (SAR) uOttawa Program since its creation in 2014 and previously served on the national Section from 2016 to 2022, including as Chair from 2020 to 2022. She has also been a member of the SAR International Advisory Committee (IAC) since 2016, representing SARCAN and the Coalition for Academic Freedom in the Americas (CAFA).

In light of increasing global attacks on academic freedom, science, and university autonomy, Viviana emphasizes that the work of SAR and its members is more necessary than ever. She hopes to strengthen the role of the Canadian section by joining international efforts, sharing best practices, and encouraging advocacy actions in Canada and beyond.

Her mandate runs until November 2027 and may be renewed twice.
