The Faculty of Social Sciences is pleased to announce a new publication by Professor Karine Vanthuyne: The Futures of Reparations in Latin America: Imagination, Translation, and Belonging, published by Rutgers University Press.
Over the past three decades, Latin America has seen an unprecedented wave of reparations addressing political violence, colonial dispossession, and environmental harm. In this timely book, Professor Vanthuyne examines how reparations do more than confront difficult pasts — they shape how societies imagine justice, democracy, and belonging in the future.
Drawing on cases from across the region, the book explores how experiences of harm are translated into claims for repair, and how these processes both challenge and reinforce state authority.
The Futures of Reparations in Latin America is an important contribution to contemporary debates on justice, memory, and political transformation.
