Benjamin Ferland, from the School of Political Studies, has published a new textbook titled Stata et l’analyse de données en sciences sociales, a practical and accessible guide to quantitative methods designed specifically for social science students.

Unlike many traditional textbooks that place heavy emphasis on theory, this manual adopts an applied, hands-on approach that closely integrates theory and practice while introducing Stata, one of the most widely used data analysis tools in the social sciences. The book is structured around the classic stages of the research process, guiding readers through data exploration, variable manipulation, descriptive and inferential statistics, and advancing to linear regression and interaction effects.

To enhance accessibility and learning, mathematical demonstrations are presented in an appendix, allowing students to focus on an intuitive understanding of concepts while still having access to formal proofs when needed. This structure makes the textbook particularly well suited for introductory and intermediate courses in quantitative methods.

As one of the few comprehensive French-language textbooks of its kind, Stata et l’analyse de données en sciences sociales is poised to become an essential reference for social science students. It will also appeal to independent learners who wish to develop their Stata skills through the author’s clear, step-by-step methodology.
