Franco-Ontarien
On September 25, 2025, we mark a historic milestone: the 50th anniversary of the Franco-Ontarian flag, a living symbol of the resilience, unity, and pride of Franco-Ontarians.

First raised in 1975, this flag has become much more than an emblem: it embodies the vitality of francophone life in Ontario and the deep attachment of its communities to the French language and culture.

On this Franco-Ontarian Day, the Faculty of Social Sciences joins the wider community in celebrating this significant anniversary. As one of the most francophone faculties at the University of Ottawa, we proudly reaffirm our commitment to promoting the French language, supporting diversity, and strengthening francophone culture at the heart of the nation’s capital.

Our commitment is expressed through our French-language and immersion programs, which prepare citizens to meet the challenges of today and tomorrow. It is also reflected in our cutting-edge research, which informs public debate and deepens the understanding of francophone societies.

Echoing the song “Notre Place”, which has become the anthem of Franco-Ontarians, we affirm that francophonie has — and must continue to have — its rightful place in our society. For 50 years, the Franco-Ontarian flag has inspired generations to claim their place with pride, to raise their voices, and to contribute actively to the vitality of French in Ontario and across Canada.

Today, as we celebrate this anniversary, the Faculty of Social Sciences salutes the perseverance and creativity of the Franco-Ontarian community, which has turned struggles into victories and built an inclusive, dynamic, and forward-looking francophonie.
