Someone looking through a pair of glasses.

Through Rose-Coloured Glasses? Thinking Critically About “Smart” Glasses and Consent

Individual informed consent is the standard approach to ensure that privacy interests are protected when personal information is collected and used — and the model is broken. As a result of scientific and technological developments, personal information collected about one person today implicates them in the future, other information they did not release, other individuals and groups to whom they are connected, and even algorithmically-assembled groups to which they have no evident relationship.

Using the example of AI-powered ’smart’ glasses, and informed by your insight and input, Prof. Jane Bailey (University of Ottawa) and Dr. Jacquelyn Burkell (Western University) will explore how new technologies challenge existing models of consent.

About the speakers

Prof. Jane Bailey is a Faculty member at the Centre for Law, Technology and Society, and a Full Professor within the Faculty of Law, Common Law Section at the University of Ottawa. Her research relates to the inter-related privacy and equality impacts of existing and emerging technologies in digitally networked environments, focusing on their disproportionately negative effects on communities already marginalized by oppressions such as misogyny, racism, homophobia, transphobia, colonialism, and their intersections.

Dr. Jacquelyn Burkell is an Associate member of the University of Ottawa Centre for Law, Technology and Society and an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Information and Media Studies at the University of Western Ontario.
