Application process is open.

Application deadline: March 16, 2026 at 5:00pm ET

Announcement of award recipients: April 15, 2026

Project start: No earlier than May 1, 2026, and no later than June 1, 2026.

Important Changes for 2026: When comparing our USRA program with those of other Canadian universities, we found that the minimum contribution from University of Ottawa professors had been below average for several years. To correct this situation and provide our students with amounts similar to those received by their peers, the Office of International Research and Experiential Learning (IREX) will implement a first increase in this contribution in 2026 and a second increase in 2027, as follows:

2026 competition: minimum contribution of $2,750

2027 competition: minimum contribution of $4,000

The above contributions are in addition to the $6,000 grant from the Government of Canada, resulting in:

  • a minimum of $8,750 ($6,000 + $2,750) in the summer of 2026
  • a minimum amount of $10,000 ($6,000 + $4,000) in the summer of 2027

See the Overview section of our website for more information.

  • Students in the University of Ottawa cooperative education program may apply for a USRA. If awarded a scholarship, credits from the cooperative program may be granted for the research project. Additional information can be found in Step 1 of the Application section below.

Objectives

The Undergraduate Student Research Awards (USRA) program aims to stimulate student interest in research in the natural sciences and engineering. Several additional awards are available to students from other areas (please consult next paragraph as conditions apply). Research projects undertaken by USRA recipients include work that bridges disciplines.

If you would like to gain research experience that complements your studies at the University of Ottawa, the USRA can provide the financial support to do so.

Qualified Indigenous and Black students are highly encouraged to apply for this program. Additional USRAs from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) are available to self-identified Black students interested in conducting research in health care, social sciences or the humanities. The University of Ottawa has been allocated a separate number of awards from each agency for this special initiative. Please note: Presently, the CIHR and SSHRC USRAs are exclusively for Black student researchers.

Reminder: All interested students are encouraged to refer to the following link: Selecting the appropriate federal granting agency to ensure that their research fits within the mandate of their selected agency.

Overview

Duration

The research project must take place over at least 14 consecutive weeks and no more than 16 consecutive weeks. The project must not start earlier than May 1, 2026, and must not start later than June 1, 2026.

Award value

For the summer of 2026, USRAs have a minimum value of $8,750, where $6,000 comes from NSERC (or CIHR or SSHRC) and $2,750 comes from the host supervisor.

As for the summer 2027 call, this amount will be going up to $ 4,000.

Host supervisors must make the entire amount of funding available to students; the portion provided by NSERC (or CIHR or SSHRC) is transferred to the University of Ottawa following the conclusion of the USRA summer period and then reimbursed into the supervisor’s designated research accounts.
