Biography

Paulre-joined the G.G. Hatch Stable Isotope Laboratory in February of 2001 after having spent 12 years as manager of the Laboratory for Stable Isotope Studies (LSIS) at the University of Western Ontario. Paul is an alumnus of the Department of Earth Sciences here at the University of Ottawa. The enthusiasm, energy and global planning Paul has brought to the Lab are very much appreciated! He has overseen the transition from old dual inlet machines and mostly off-line techniques, to a completely new fleet of five continuous flow mass spectrometers, then another set of four new mass spectrometers 20 years later, in late 2025/early 2026.

Erin’s introduction to stable isotopes began while completing her Honours B.Sc. in Chemistry here at the University of Ottawa. She continued to work part-time at the G.G. Hatch Stable Isotope Laboratory (now the Ján Veizer Stable Isotope Laboratory) until leaving in 2019. Erin returned to the Ján Veizer Stable Isotope Laboratory in 2021 as a full-time Junior Technician.  She has taken over the teaching of the Isomass/Thermo training courses from Kerry.

Kerry Klassen

Kerry Klassen (retired)

Sr. Lab Technician and Instructor (Retired)

Biography

Kerry began her introduction to Stable Isotopes in 1991 at the University of Saskatchewan Isotope Laboratory. In 1995 she moved to Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. In her role as Lab Manager she assisted Dr. Kurt Kyser to build a State of the Art Isotope Facility (Queen’s Facility for Isotope Research).

After a couple of years managing a commercial lab in Alberta, Kerry joined the G.G. Hatch Stable Isotope Laboratory in April 2016 to take over the IRMS Training Courses that Gilles St-Jean had been teaching for the previous 15 years in collaboration with Isomass and Thermo. Her time was split between teaching the IRMS courses and the JVSILab as a Senior Technician.

Kerry has a vast knowledge of the stable isotope field; her easy going approach and smiling personality made her a great collegue.

Patricia Wickham (deceased)

Patricia Wickham (deceased)

Passed away December 9th, 2024.

Biography

Patricia joined the team in 1997, coming from GEOTOP in Montreal, with an MSc in Biology/Environmental Science. She divided her time between lab work (in particular freshwater TIC/TOC and DIC/DOC) and the financial administration of the Lab.

Patricia was known for her thoroughness and her common sense approach in dealing with our users. Her smile is very much missed.
