Éric Ménard, Protection Services, named Health and Safety Leader for November 2025
Whenever an emergency occurs on campus, the Protection Services team is often the first to respond. Our officers are highly trained to handle a wide range of situations, including fires, spills and medical emergencies.

In September, one of our students experienced a sudden, life-threatening medical emergency that required immediate intervention. Nearby students acted quickly; they called Protection Services and retrieved the closest Automated External Defibrillator (AED). Protection Services Team Coordinator Éric Ménard was the first to arrive. Without hesitation, he deployed the AED and began CPR, continuing until paramedics arrived and took over.

Performing CPR demands strength, endurance and unwavering commitment—qualities that Éric demonstrated in his efforts to save this student’s life. His quick thinking and determination to overcome physical and mental challenges testify to his dedication to helping others. This is just one of many instances where Éric has gone above and beyond for our uOttawa community, and we are truly grateful to have him on the Protection Services team.

We extend our sincere congratulations and deepest appreciation to Éric Ménard and all members of Protection Services for their ongoing prevention efforts and emergency response services. We also want to thank the students whose quick actions—contacting Protection Services and locating the nearest AED—were instrumental in this success story.

It’s always a good idea to be prepared for emergencies. Explore the Are you ready? website to learn how to prepare for different types of emergencies and use the interactive campus map to get more familiar with where to find an AED.
