Giving Tuesday at uOttawa goes beyond giving: it’s a celebration of shared compassion and a commitment to making a lasting difference.

On Tuesday, December 2, this annual fundraising effort will focus once again on tackling food insecurity among students, an issue that continues to grow more dire with every passing year. In September alone, the uOttawa Students’ Union (UOSU) Food Bank served 652 students, nearly three times more than last year. Behind each of these numbers is a student striving to succeed, and a community ready to help.

Last year, University of Ottawa staff, alumni, professors and friends raised more than $92,000 for the uOttawa Fund, which supports a range of student priorities, including scholarships, student assistance and mental health support, Indigenous initiatives and more. Of this, over $12,000 and 500 non-perishable food items were donated to the Food Bank.

“Every act of kindness — no matter the size — reminds our students that they are not alone,” says Jack Coen, president of the UOSU. “When our community rallies together, we do more than stock shelves. We nourish hope, confidence and opportunity.”

By donating to the uOttawa Fund, you can be sure that your Giving Tuesday donations will help the Food Bank’s shelves remain full and that no student has to choose between rent and groceries. Donations directly assist in extending hours of service, providing fresh and nutritious food options, and improving access to essential supplies.

Students who can afford to do so are encouraged to join in these efforts between December 1 and 5 by donating non-perishable items to the UOSU Food Bank (UCU Room 07).

The most-requested items include:

  • Rice, pasta, lentils
  • Tomato sauce and canned fish
  • Toothpaste, soap, and hygiene products

Last year, more than 240 donors supported the uOttawa Fund during Giving Tuesday, a testament to the spirit of generosity that defines our university. This year, organizers are calling on even more people to join in and continue this incredible legacy of compassion.

We know that most students are on very tight budgets, but if you know anyone who is willing and able to provide financial support, please send them this link to the uOttawa Fund.
