A species doomed to be treated as inferior? Francophonie as a ground of discrimination in human rights law

Presentation by Anne Levesque, Associate Professor in the Faculty of Law (Common Law Section) and Gordon F. Henderson Chair in Human Rights (HRREC).

This presentation will examine the idea of adding language, and more specifically Francophonie, as a prohibited ground of discrimination under human rights laws in Canada. Using Indigenous peoples as a case study, the presentation will argue that prohibiting discrimination against Francophones would allow them to enjoy the same rights and protections as other minorities under human rights laws, while preserving their unique status as a founding people. The goal is to reignite dialogue within the Francophone community on the potential benefits and pitfalls of such protection.
