“Though we do not yet have many details, including about resources, the newly announced plan for a Financial Crimes Agency offers the prospect of creating capacity to study, investigate and respond to a subset of financial crime generally perpetrated by organized crime through the banking system. This announcement does not address Canada’s lack of a focused strategy to coordinate responses to economic crime more generally, particularly corruption, fraud against the government and bid-rigging, which tends to be committed in the ordinary course of a legitimate business operation. Canada remains out of step with its international peers on its lack of an agency to coordinate these matters.”
