Published by the University of Ottawa Press and available in both French and English, this collective work presents the results of multi-site ethnographic research conducted in seven Quebec civil society organizations. The book sheds light on how diverse groups across the province are fostering active citizenship among youth through innovative educational practices.
Funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC), the project offers seven detailed case studies that examine and compare a variety of approaches to youth citizenship education — from children’s rights advocacy and feminist social action to community organizing, alter-globalization movements, and participation in municipal and school governance.
Edited by Stéphanie Gaudet, Full Professor at the University of Ottawa’s School of Sociological and Anthropological Studies and Director of the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research on Citizenship and Minorities (CIRCEM), and Caroline Caron, Full Professor in the Department of Social Sciences at the Université du Québec en Outaouais, in collaboration with Sophie Théwissen-LeBlanc, the book brings together contributions from Brieg Capitaine, Hérold Constant, Alexandre Cournoyer, Emilie Drapeau, Mariève Forest, Maxime Goulet-Langlois, and François Marchand.
Written in an accessible and engaging style, Doing Democracy in "Third Places" invites educators, researchers, and community leaders to reflect on how youth learn democracy by doing — in spaces where civic engagement naturally unfolds.
