Problems that are all too real
According to Layal Dleikan, manager of psychotherapy and mental health services at the Student Health and Wellness Centre, students’ top concerns these days are academic stress, mental exhaustion and isolation, particularly for international and graduate students. Life transitions, relationship problems and conditions like ADHD or autism spectrum disorder are also high on the list.
“Students have different schedules and preferences. We need to support them where they need it, and how they need it. That’s why uOttawa is focusing on a variety of approaches,” Layal explains.
Student support groups
A key focus is offering support groups to reach more students and spark conversations between them. Overseen by psychotherapists, psychologists and case managers, these groups provide confidential spaces for attendees, encouraging them to share their experiences and promoting personal growth. The goal is to provide an inclusive, intersectional approach to mental wellness.

Want to sign up for a support group? Book an appointment through the Student Health and Wellness Centre portal, and select “Support Group Registration.” Afterwards, you’ll meet with an intake officer, who will confirm if the group you’re interested in is right for you.
Multiple forms of support for more access
Student Wellness has adopted a hybrid model for mental health support, spanning digital and in-person options, peer support, professional services and the community sector. This ives you access to more flexible, relevant services. Here are some more forms of mental health support:
- The uoWellness app: tips, tricks and daily missions for wellness
- TAO self-help: an online platform with self-guided resources available 24/7
- Wellness lounges (information, education and workshops)
- Peer support: a listening ear in an empathetic, no-pressure environment
- The Student Health and Wellness Centre: medical and mental health care
- The Shoppers Drug Mart Pharmacy Care Clinic
