Professor Melike Erol-Kantarci has been honoured with the 2025 IEEE Women in Communications Engineering (WICE) Outstanding Achievement Award, recognizing her influential research in AI-enabled wireless network, her leadership in emerging 6G technologies, and her commitment to advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion within the communications engineering community.

The Women in Communications Engineering (WICE) award is an international honour recognizing excellence and leadership in the rapidly evolving field of communications engineering.

As part of the IEEE Communications Society, the WICE committee works to advance the visibility, participation, and career growth of women in communications engineering. Each year, WICE presents four major global awards to celebrate influential leaders in the field.

This year, Professor Erol-Kantarci from the Faculty of Engineering’s School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science was selected for the 2025 WICE Outstanding Achievement Award in recognition of her significant technical contributions, leadership, and impact on the global communications engineering community.

Global research and dedicated involvement with IEEE

Professor Erol-Kantarci is internationally recognized for her research on AI-enabled wireless networks and emerging 6G technologies, with a focus on how connectivity, intelligence and sustainability intersect. Her work advances these priorities by creating innovative multi-agent deep learning and foundation model-based solutions for network slicing, integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) and reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) among other real-world applications.

She holds the Canada Research Chair in Artificial Intelligence-Enabled, Next-Generation Wireless Networks and is a recently elected IEEE Fellow, and has made influential contributions that span both academic and industry applications.  When reflecting on receiving the WICE awards, she shared:
