Family Enterprise Legacy Institute

Canada is undergoing a major transfer of wealth and leadership, yet research on family enterprise continues to focus on the parental generation. The Family Enterprise Legacy Institute exists to bridge this gap by advancing knowledge and practice centred on the next generation.

Our vision

Two farmers

To be a leading hub for family enterprise knowledge creation and next generation training.

By deepening Canada’s understanding of family enterprise and strengthening the relationships between emerging leaders and older generations, the country can unlock a vast, largely untapped source of entrepreneurial potential. Stronger family enterprises mean a more dynamic, innovative and resilient Canadian economy — today and for generations to come.

Our mission

To empower the next generation of enterprising families to thrive.

Our priority is developing and sharing the knowledge and practices that next generation leaders need to grow with confidence, responsibility and purpose. Our work focuses on three core areas:

Providing thought leadership

Advancing research that centres next generation perspectives and shapes new best practices in family enterprise.
A group meeting

Creating a forum for learning and practice

Creating opportunities for dialogue, reflection and applied learning across generations.

Offering a safe place

Fostering environments where next generation members can explore challenges, ask difficult questions and learn from one another.

Leadership

Under the direction of Peter Jaskiewicz, the Family Enterprise Legacy Institute brings together leading international researchers in family enterprise.

Peter Jaskiewicz’s research centres on responsible next generation ownership, tailored family governance, owner succession, family offices and long-term value creation in enterprising families.

His recent book, 35 Questions that Next Generation Members in Enterprising Families Ask, co-authored with Sabine Rau, has become a foundational reference for families, advisers and scholars around the world.
