Florian Martin-Bariteau
A recognized expert in the design of legal frameworks protecting rights and freedoms in the digital context, Dr. Florian Martin-Bariteau has been renewed as the University Research Chair in Technology and Society.

The University Research Chair in Technology and Society will lead a bilingual program of excellence in research on the law, ethics and policy of emerging and frontier technologies, using a transdisciplinary, comparative and forward-looking approach. This program will focus on the major challenges of governing algorithmic platforms and, in a forward-looking approach, on quantum technologies. The Chair will continue to develop public policy proposals grounded in rigorous research and to carry out awareness and outreach activities with the industry, public policymakers and civil society in Canada and around the world.

Renewed as the University Research Chair in Technology and Society, Dr. Florian Martin-Bariteau will lead a research program in law, ethics and technology policy around the security, regulation and governance of algorithmic and quantum technologies, from an interdisciplinary perspective, and building on his global, multijural and multilingual network of experts. Focusing on the interface between law and technology, particularly issues of power and informational asymmetries, the program is structured around two main themes: rethinking the governance of algorithmic platforms and anticipating the governance of society in the quantum era.

Geared towards public policy reform, this research program aims to support inclusive and responsible innovation, rather than hindering technological advances in the face of potential risks. It will build on the interdisciplinary research on digital policies, blockchains, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and quantum technologies carried out during the Chair's first term, whose quality and significance have been widely recognized.

Dr. Martin-Bariteau is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Law, Common Law Section, and the Director of the Centre for Law, Technology and Society at the University of Ottawa. He is also a Faculty associate at the Berkman-Klein Center for Internet and Society at Harvard University and a member of the Nexus for Quantum Technologies Institute at the University of Ottawa. He was recently elected to the College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists of the Royal Society of Canada, adding him to the list of Canada's most influential new voices.

The Chair will continue to be supported by the University of Ottawa's Centre for Law, Technology and Society, Canada's premier research group on technology law, ethics and policy, which hosts seven Canada Research Chairs and three University Research Chairs.

Congratulations to Dr. Florian Martin-Bariteau!
