schuman challenge
PhD candidates Nur Kumru and Renan Gadoni Canaan were finalists at the 2025 Schuman Challenge, a prestigious policy competition for Canadian university students.

Organized by the Delegation of the European Union to Canada, the Shuman Challenge invites students to engage with pressing global debates at the intersection of EU-Canada relations. This year’s theme was “Artificial Intelligence as a Key Technology: Opportunities for EU–Canada Cooperation.”

Nur Kumru and Renan Gadoni were one of the five finalist teams invited to present their proposals before a jury of diplomats, academics, and policy professionals: “Reforming AI Regulatory Sandboxes: EU–Canada Cooperative Policy Options to Address Inequalities and Discrimination Affecting Indigenous and National Minorities”.

The Schuman Challenge is a European Union’s flagship academic competition for university students in Canada. The initiative encourages students to engage in pressing global debates and explore the shared values and interests of the EU and Canada. Students competed in teams of two, preparing essays that combined case studies with concrete policy recommendations.

Nur Kumru and Renan Gadoni are both Ph.D. candidates in Law at the University of Ottawa Centre for Law, Technology and Society under the supervision of Dr. Teressa Scassa.

Congratulations to Nur Kumru and Renan Gadoni !
