As a global research hub, we welcome visiting graduate students from Canada and abroad who wish to spend an extended period of time at the University of Ottawa to engage in collaborative and interdisciplinary explorations on technology law, ethics and policy.

The University of Ottawa Centre for Law, Technology and Society does not directly run a formal application-based visitor program for graduate students. Rather, graduate researchers who wish to come and spend periods of time in Ottawa to do their own research should be selected and sponsored by our Faculty members at their own discretion.

As with any other graduate student, visiting students will be integrated into the Centre’s community life. They will be included in our activities and events, and receive all internal messages, from public and private events to job and research opportunities. Long-term visitors may also be featured on our website.

Visiting students will be granted access to the CLTS Hub – our collaborative research space – and will be welcomed to use the shared workspaces.

Prospective visiting students are encouraged to align their visits with uOttawa academic terms (September-December; January-April) to ensure full immersion in all that our community has to offer. While summer visits (May-August) are possible, visitors should be aware that there are usually fewer activities and people on campus.

The Centre does not provide financial assistance to visiting students. In addition, they will not be eligible for the awards and bursaries offered by the Centre to graduate students enrolled in regular programs at the University of Ottawa.

Professors, postdoctoral fellows and other non-student researchers interested in visiting the Centre should consult our Visitors Program

Canadian Visiting Students

Canadian students can be welcomed for short (1-4 weeks), medium (1-4 months) or long-term visits.

For short visits, no access card will be issued. To enter the CLTS Hub, visitors will have to ring the bell during working hours.

In addition, no library access or WiFi credentials will be issued. Most students from all over the world can access WiFi on campus through Eduroam. If required, visitors should follow the procedure for Visiting Research Students (see below).

Procedure

Prospective visitors should contact a Faculty member affiliated with the Centre to discuss the feasibility of a visit and their willingness to act as supervisor and sponsor them.

Once a Faculty member has accepted to sponsor a visit, they must send a request by email to cdts.clts@uottawa.ca, including:

  • full name;
  • email;
  • home institution and program;
  • expected start and end dates;
  • a short statement about the research program to be led by the visiting student.

The request shall be sent at least two months before the expected start date.

Visiting Research Students

International and Canadian students can be welcomed for medium-term (1-4 months) or long-term (1 year or more) visits under the university’s Visiting Research Students program.

Under this framework, visitors are expected to be in Ottawa and on campus for the majority of the duration of their affiliation.

Procedure

Prospective visitors should contact a Faculty member affiliated with the Centre to discuss the feasibility of a visit and their willingness to act as supervisor and sponsor them.

Once a Faculty member has accepted to sponsor a visit, the visitor and the Faculty must follow the Procedure for Visiting Research Students as detailed by the Office of the Vice-President, Research and Innovation. Program officers will support them through the enrollment process: from visit approval to visa requirements, registration, and health care coverage. Please note that the Centre does not have the capacity to support this process.

Once a VRS admission is approved, and at least a month before arrival, the Faculty member must notify cdts.clts@uottawa.ca, with:

  • full name;
  • email;
  • uOttawa student number (if available);
  • home institution and program;
  • expected start and end dates;
  • a short statement about the research program to be led by the visiting student.

The request shall be sent at least two months before the expected start date.
