As a global hub, we gather in an interdisciplinary setting a community of thought leaders from the University of Ottawa and beyond, engaging in collaborative and interdisciplinary explorations on technology law, ethics and policy.

The University of Ottawa Centre for Law, Technology and Society does not run a formal application-based affiliation program. Rather, researchers can join our community upon an invitation by the Board or by being sponsored by a Faculty member, at their own discretion.

The Centre’s community includes:

  • Faculty members;
  • Associate members;
  • Visiting scholars, visiting researchers and fellows;
  • Affiliates such as postdoctoral fellows, research associates and other non-student researchers;
  • Undergraduate and graduate student affiliates, including visiting research students.

Members are expected to contribute to the Centre’s mission by engaging in a program of research in technology law, ethics and policy, and ensuring that the Centre has visibility in their publications, research, knowledge mobilization, and grant applications related to the Centre’s areas of research. Members are also expected to be involved in the Centre’s community life.

Members are supported by the Centre to pursue their research endeavours. The Centre involves them in many public and private activities and events and promotes their projects and outputs through various communication channels.

In addition, members are granted access to the CLTS Hub – our collaborative research space – where a boardroom, shared workspaces, and offices are available based on needs and capacity.

Faculty members

Faculty members are regular full-time professors at the University of Ottawa who teach or research in the Centre’s areas of interest. They provide support to the Centre and take part in its activities.

To be appointed and remain a Faculty member, a professor should teach, publish academic papers, present contributions, or seek funding in at least one of the Centre’s areas of interest. To be renewed as a Faculty member, the professor should have been active in the Centre’s activities and programs related to their research interests, and, where possible, have mentioned their affiliation with the Centre in their related research activities.

Prospective candidates should contact the Director of the Centre or Faculty members with whom they have ongoing collaborations.

Faculty members are appointed by the Board, upon a proposal from the Director, or one-third of the Members of the Board. The appointment is for a term of three full academic years, which is renewable without limit.

Associate members

Associate members are full-time professors at the University of Ottawa or at another university, who are active in the Centre’s projects and activities.

To be appointed and remain as such, Associate members should pursue a research agenda related to an area of interest of the Centre and take part in relevant Centre activities.

Prospective candidates should contact the Director of the Centre or Faculty members with whom they have ongoing collaborations.

Visiting scholars, researchers and fellows

Fellows, Visiting Scholars and Visiting Researchers are academics and professionals who will take part in the Centre’s projects and activities for a predetermined period.

Visiting scholars and researchers

The Centre does not directly run a formal application-based visitors program. Rather, visiting researchers who wish to come and spend periods of time in Ottawa to do their own research are usually selected and sponsored by our Faculty members, at their own discretion.

More details about the procedure and provided support can be found on our Visitor Program page.

Fellows

From time to time, the Centre may consider appointing distinguished visitors as Centre fellows who will be involved in core programs and activities of the Centre or to run specific programs.

Prospective candidates should contact the Director of the Centre at cdts.clts@uottawa.ca to discuss this option and the support that could be provided.

Fellows are appointed by decision of the Director following a consultation with the Board.

Postdoctoral fellows and other research affiliates

The Centre itself does not directly offer such research positions; however, our Faculty members do hire individuals as postdoctoral fellows, research associates, clinical staff, etc., to work on their research projects.

Prospective candidates should contact the Faculty members with whom they wish to collaborate. Current openings may be displayed on our opportunities page or on uOttawa Workday.

Postdoctoral fellows and other researchers are affiliated with the Centre by decision of the Director upon the recommendation of Faculty members.

Student affiliates

For graduate and undergraduate students at the University of Ottawa, there are different opportunities to join the Centre:

  • Students can join the Centre by being enrolled in academic graduate programs supported by the Centre, or by being supervised by a Faculty member. Interested students should directly contact the program coordinators or Faculty members to discuss these opportunities.
  • Students can also join the Centre by joining the research teams of the Faculty members, chairs, initiatives and labs hosted by the Centre.
